Position Summary/About the role
Title: Cognos Analytics Developer
Location: New York, NY
Duration: 3 months with extension
Job Description:
  • Assess the current IBM Cognos Analytics environment, including system architecture, usage patterns, report inventory, data volumes, usage metrics, security controls, and access management.
  • Evaluate the existing infrastructure and IT landscape supporting Cognos, identifying dependencies, constraints, and optimization opportunities.
  • Analyze reporting requirements, including report inventory and categorization, data source mapping, user access and security, dashboards, interactive features, and report distribution methods.
  • Review compliance, governance, and security requirements related to reporting and analytics platforms.
  • Identify pain points, gaps, and technical limitations in the current Cognos environment.
  • Evaluate alignment of the existing Cognos platform with Microsoft Azure analytics solutions, identifying opportunities, constraints, and architectural considerations.
  • Assess compatibility and integration potential with Microsoft Fabric components, including OneLake, Synapse Analytics, and Power BI.
  • Translate assessment findings into actionable recommendations and develop a high-level migration strategy.
  • Create a projected implementation timeline and a detailed roadmap outlining phases, milestones, and dependencies.
  • Develop and present a training and knowledge transfer plan to enable internal staff to support the future-state analytics platform.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations and reports summarizing findings, recommendations, and next steps to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with technical teams, business users, and leadership to ensure alignment with organizational goals and modernization initiatives.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience in working with enterprise business intelligence and analytics platforms, including IBM Cognos Analytics.
  • Proven experience assessing BI architectures, report inventories, data models, and analytics environments.
  • Strong knowledge of data warehousing, reporting, dashboards, and analytics solutions.
  • Experience evaluating security, access controls, governance, and compliance within enterprise reporting environments.
  • Hands-on experience analyzing data sources, data volumes, usage metrics, and performance.
  • Ability to identify gaps, risks, and modernization opportunities in legacy BI platforms.
  • Experience developing actionable recommendations, assessment reports, and high-level migration plans.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure analytics services, including Azure Synapse Analytics, Power BI, Azure Data Factory, or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric components such as OneLake, Synapse, and Power BI.
  • Experience planning or executing BI platform migrations (e.g., Cognos to Azure/Power BI).
  • Knowledge of data governance, compliance, and security standards in government or regulated environments.
  • Experience creating implementation roadmaps, timelines, and training plans.
  • Prior experience supporting public-sector or government analytics initiatives.
  • Familiarity with Agile or iterative project delivery methodologies.
